How to Read Shots on Target and Corner Stats

The scoreline never tells the whole story. Here is how to read shots, shots on target, corners and possession to understand a match on a deeper level.

The final score is the bluntest indicator of what actually happened on the pitch. Two teams can reach the same 1-1 result in completely different ways: one dominated and failed to convert, the other sat deep and scored from a set piece. Shot, corner and other match stats help you see that difference — and they're what you should be reading before trusting a prediction for the next game, not just the scoreline.

Shots: total, on target, off target and blocked

Every match page on xG.Football breaks shots down into several categories:

  • Shots — the total number of attempts on goal;
  • Shots on target — shots that were heading in and forced a save (or scored);
  • Shots off target — attempts that missed the frame;
  • Blocked shots — stopped by a defender before reaching the goalkeeper;
  • Shots inside / outside the box — show where a team is creating its chances from.

The key rule: look at the share of shots on target relative to total shots, not the raw shot count. A team with 8 shots and 6 on target created higher-quality chances than a team with 20 shots and only 4 on target — even though the second team looks "more active" on paper. This is the same principle behind xG (expected goals), which rates the quality of each shot rather than just counting them.

Corners: a pressure signal, not a goal guarantee

Corners are usually read as a proxy for territorial pressure: a team that attacks a lot down the flanks and repeatedly forces the opponent to clear the ball out for a corner is probably spending more time in the final third. But a corner isn't a chance by itself — most corners never lead to a shot at all. That's why corners are far more useful read alongside shots and possession than on their own.

Possession and passing aren't always about quality

High possession doesn't guarantee a win: some teams deliberately cede the ball and play on the counter, producing more shots from fewer touches through quick transitions. Pass accuracy is often more informative than the possession percentage itself — a team with low possession but high accuracy on short attacking passes is frequently playing more organised football than one simply holding the ball in its own half.

  • Look at the share of shots on target, not just the raw count;
  • Cross-check corners against shots — pressure without shots often means little;
  • Check the per-half breakdown if a team typically starts slow or fades late;
  • Compare the current match against the team's last-5-games form on the team or competition page;
  • Treat stats as one input among several, not the sole basis for a prediction or a football bet.
