An Asian handicap is a type of handicap in which a draw after the handicap is applied refunds the bet instead of losing it, and on quarter lines the stake is split into two halves. The handicap itself is a notional head start or deficit in goals added to one team's score before the result is decided. What a handicap is
A handicap evens out the chances of teams of different strength. A set number of goals is added to (or subtracted from) one team's final score, and the bet is settled on the adjusted score.
Example: a bet on the home side −1. The match ends 2-0. With the handicap the score is 1-0, so the bet wins. At 1-0 the adjusted score is 0-0.
What happens next depends on the type of handicap:
- in a European handicap, an adjusted 0-0 is a separate "handicap draw" outcome, and a bet on the home side loses;
- in an Asian handicap on a whole-number line, that result means the stake is refunded.
The general rule: a minus means the team has to win by a margin; a plus means the team can fail to win, or even lose by a small margin.

Half lines (0.5, 1.5) rule out a refund, so there are always two outcomes.
0 handicap
A 0 handicap is the simplest Asian line. If the chosen team wins, the bet wins. If it loses, the bet loses. If the match is drawn, the stake is refunded.
In effect, a 0 handicap is a bet on a win with insurance against the draw. That is why its odds are shorter than for a plain win in 1X2.
Asian handicap 0.25 and other quarter lines
Quarter lines (0.25, 0.75, 1.25 and so on) split the stake equally between the two neighbouring lines.
Asian handicap +0.25 (sometimes written "0, +0.5") — half the stake goes on 0, half on +0.5:
- the team wins — both halves win;
- draw — the half on 0 is refunded and the half on +0.5 wins: half the stake wins;
- the team loses — both halves lose.
Handicap −0.25 ("0, −0.5"): on a draw half is refunded and half loses, so half the stake is lost.
Handicap −0.75 ("−0.5, −1"):
- win by 2+ — both halves win;
- win by 1 — the half on −0.5 wins, the half on −1 is refunded;
- draw or defeat — both halves lose.
Quarter lines exist to fine-tune the price: they sit between a whole and a half line in both risk and odds.
How to assess a handicap bet
The logic is the same as for any bet: you need your own probability estimate to compare with the odds. For a 0 handicap this is easy to derive from 1X2 probabilities: remove the draw and rescale the other two outcomes. For example, if you rate a home win at 50%, a draw at 25% and an away win at 25%, then on a 0 handicap the home side's chance is 50 / (50 + 25) ≈ 66.7%, fair odds of about 1.50.

Common mistakes
- Mixing up European and Asian handicaps. Written the same way as −1, they treat a one-goal win differently.
- Forgetting the halves on quarter lines. A partial win or loss changes the overall return.
- Taking a big minus handicap on the favourite "for the odds". The bigger the handicap, the more has to go right.
